Mason Tang — Clear Lake Tutor

Meet Mason Tang

Mason Tang earned his Bachelor of Science from Texas Tech University and is a certified teacher with over a decade of teaching experience, including positions at Channelview High School and Lubbock High School. He specializes in making math and science engaging, relatable, and easy to understand through personalized one-on-one instruction.

After teaching, Mason transitioned into software engineering. He eventually led a custom software team at NRG, a Fortune 200 company, building custom software for teams across Research, Analytics, Innovation, Marketing, and Sales. That experience now shapes how he teaches students to think analytically and solve problems creatively.

Mason's mission is to equip students with the skills and confidence to succeed, both in the classroom and beyond. In addition to core STEM subjects, he tutors study skills, time management, coding, AI literacy, and entrepreneurship. The goal is for the student to be well-rounded for college and their career.

He loves turning abstract math and science concepts into engaging stories that make learning stick. For Mason, nothing beats the “lightbulb moment” when a concept finally clicks for a student. He offers both in-person and online tutoring throughout the Houston area.

Outside of tutoring, you'll find Mason on the basketball court, exploring Houston's food scene, traveling, playing video games, or watching sports.

Tutoring Process

A student-centered approach designed to build confidence, mastery, and a love for learning.

1

Get to know the student

Mason starts by getting to know each student through their hobbies, favorite subjects, goals, and career aspirations. Once he understands the student's personality, he can make math and science relatable through storytelling tailored to their interests.

2

Identify their weaknesses

When a student is struggling in school, it usually comes down to study skills, gaps in vocabulary, or missing math fundamentals. Once Mason identifies the root cause, he and the student can work together to target that weakness and improve their grades.

3

Break down complicated concepts into multiple steps

Learning a new math or science concept is rarely a single problem. It involves multiple steps. When Mason explains a concept, he makes sure students understand that one problem can have several steps, and walks them through each one.

4

Let the student explain what they learned

Mason checks a student's understanding by asking them to explain the concept back to him. The highest form of learning is being able to teach it to someone else.

5

Practice and repetition

Mason curates and creates custom notes, worksheets, and tests for each student, so they can practice a subject until they've truly mastered it.
